The proposal for this convention center was the result of a dialogue between two lines of investigation.
By changing a few terms, the act checking into a convention is transformed into a narrative about being indoctrinated into a cult. This narrative redefines and reorganizes the typical programmatic components into architecture that correspond to the stages of indoctrination.
In addition to the narrative, a series of figural studies explore the relationship between character and monumentality in an effort to create architecture that is simultaneously relatable and sublime.
The combination of these two lines of investigation allow for a productive friction in which the narrative is strengthened by the formal possibilities implicit in the figural studies, while the character of the figural studies is strengthened by the cult narrative. As a proposal, the project creates an interior urbanism out of a specific sequence of phenomenal affects and a form that encourages multiple associations and narratives.
